Talks and Presentations

I usually give talks (and sometimes workshops) at conferences and venues that have a psychological and spiritual component, since all of my talks are about the psycho-spiritual domain and development process. They might cover obstacles to unfolding, or the methods that seem to help certain types of people in unfolding. Some talks include the latest scientific information that supports ancient ideas, where science is finally catching up with the ancient wisdom traditions. I like to ask for audience input. I might ask for someone to describe an experience that is related to what I'm presenting, so the example comes from the people there. I ask deepening questions, and it's the best talk when they can recognize something in themselves that's already there and that they can visit again. You can sign up for the mailing list to receive notification when I've scheduled a public talk or workshop.

Teaching in the Clinical Psychology PsyD program
at The California Institute for Integral Studies

Teaching at the California Institute for Integral Studies has been a wonderful experience because I don't think I would have enjoyed teaching at any other institution. Their mission when founded was to combine the best of eastern spiritual tradition with the best of western academic tradition. Because my interest is just that, it was perfect for me. I've been able to teach courses like "Neuroscience and Spirituality," where I could talk at length about what science is beginning to show about spiritual development—and what it can't show. Another course was "Spirituality in Clinical Practice," which explored things that occur in psychotherapy which are related to spiritual unfolding.

I've been also fortunate to teach several courses that relate to psychedelics. One is called "Psychedelic Studies," which explored a whole range of topics around psychedelics, such as how they affect the human body and how different cultures have used them for development of wisdom. Recent clinical trials show the benefits for healing PTSD using MDMA and pscillocybin. These sacred medicines are soon to become prescription medications, and so this course also included information for those who wanted to develop a career path that included the use of prescription psychedelics for healing.
